IKEA Nilserik Stool review

IKEA Nilserik Stool review

Marketed as a 'standing/sitting stool'

First impressions : Definitely worth considering as a 'working' stool or even as a 'leisure' stool such as a bar stool, or for musical keyboard or desk. Marketed as a 'standing stool', but I use it mostly as a 'sitting' stool. I think of it as a 'posture' stool.

Overall score : 9/10

Price at time :
UK : £35
USA : $49.99

My score per price : 8/10
Could be slightly cheaper, but fair enough price. Good quality.

My expertise :
Ordinary consumer. Not much knowledge of possible alternatives.
Bought : UK, December 2015.
Used : about 10 times (desk, keyboard etc)
Longest use so far : about 2 hours (using it now to write this review)
My main use : sitting stool
My height : 5 foot 10 inch

Positive comments :
My view : a natural intuitive  'posture stool'
Good for 'sitting stool' or 'standing stool'
Good for adults and well-behaved teens. Perhaps kids will over-tilt.
Good as a 'working' stool, but also for leisure such as bar stool, keyboard stool, or even desk stool
Probably could sit on for hours
Encourages correct posture. Makes you tilt hip forward and spine upright with little effort. Spreads weight over thighs.
Easy height adjustment (pick 2 of 3 buttons underneath seat)
Can easily tilt to reach out etc.
Lightweight at 5.3kg (mostly plastic apart from gas-lift column)
At desk scenario : can reach out for items on desk with little hassle (e.g. tilt). Can adjust to get a good typing position (especially if desk asjustable too)

Negatives :
I guess fidgeters could tilt too much and fall over.
That aside, nothing negative springs to mind.

Gas-lift Column :
Gives good 'suspension'
Height variations : 51cm - 71cm

Seat :
Made from :  Polypropylene plastic. Adjustment lever: Acetal plastic
Comfy seat, combo of hard and soft, spreads weight but holds shape.
Curved seat seems to spread wight better
Seat feels almost like a sturdy 'air pillow'
Swivels 360 degrees

Base :
Made from : Polypropylene plastic, Highly resilient polyurethane foam (cold foam) 55 kg/cu.m.
Curved ground base, gives flexibility to tilt a bit

Price at time : £35 UK / $49.99
Worth the price ? : I would say yes (sturdy, good quality), but maybe could be £25-£30.

Assembly :
No tools needed
4 parts click together in 5 minutes or less. Not even click really, just put column in base and put seat on top. Other white part is for aesthetics.
Very little strength needed (Gran could probably assemble, but may take up to 30 minutes)

Final comments :
Everything about the stool feels right. Stylish, lightweight, comfy seat, flexibility of tilt. natural posture position. Marketed as standing stool but I use it as sitting stool mostly. Fair price. Lightweight. Easy to adjust. Certainly worth considering as a working stool or even leisure stool.
